City of Norfolk to Launch New Online Permit System May 5

The City of Norfolk is pleased to announce the upcoming launch of its new online permitting system, designed to streamline and enhance the permit application, inspection, and review process for contractors and residents. The system will officially go live on Monday, May 5, with an initial rollout of select permits.

This modernized platform is aimed at improving efficiency and accessibility for users while simplifying internal processes for city staff.

As part of the first phase, the following permits will transition to the online system:

  • Miscellaneous Permits including:
    • Communication Towers
    • Decks
    • Demolition
    • Detached Accessory Structures
    • Egress Windows
    • Fences
    • Inground Pools
    • Mobile/Manufactured Home Location
    • Moving Buildings
    • Reroofing/Roof Repair
    • Residential Basement Finishes
    • Wall Stabilization
  • Electrical Permits
  • Fire Alarm/Fire Suppression Permits
  • Mechanical Permit
  • Plumbing Permits
  • Water Heater Permits

Remaining permits—such as those for new structures, signs, and curb grinds—are still under development and will be added in the near future.

To help the public get acquainted with the new system, the city will host two open house sessions featuring a hands-on "sandbox" version of the platform:

Tuesday, April 22 | 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM

Monday, April 28, | 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM

Both sessions will take place in the Council Chambers at 309 N 5th Street, with entry through the building’s northwest corner. City staff will be available to assist and answer questions during these events.

Beginning May 5, users may set up their accounts HERE. A computer station will also be available in the City’s entryway for public use during regular business hours.
