Rechargeable Batteries Do Not Belong in the Trash

The Solid Waste Division would like to inform the public how to properly dispose rechargeable batteries. Rechargeable batteries of any kind should not be placed in your trash can. These types of  batteries contain heavy metals that can be hazardous to the environment. Some common items where these batteries can be found include: cell phones, digital cameras, power tools, laptops, and children’s electric vehicles.

All rechargeable batteries should be recycled and only single-use batteries are able to be discarded in the trash. There are several businesses that take rechargeable batteries including Ace Hardware, Bomgaars, and Alter Metal Recycling. It is recommended to call the vendor in advance to ensure you are bringing the correct battery.

The City of Norfolk Household Hazardous Waste facility will accept rechargeable batteries from households (not from businesses, schools, or churches) but they MUST be removed from the toy or appliance.

When these batteries are improperly discarded, they are not only detrimental to the environment, but can pose a danger by igniting a fire. Just this year at the City landfill, a bulldozer ran over a toy car with the battery still installed causing a fire. If you have items to get rid of, please do so carefully.
