Riverfront Trail Project
Project Description:
Prior to the project, there were no well-defined pedestrian access exits to move citizens from Third Street to the downtown area of Norfolk. With First Street being a high traffic road, it is sometimes difficult for residents to enjoy the attractions of downtown Norfolk. This trail gave residents a way to walk or bike through mid-town Norfolk without having to cross multiple streets alongside heavy traffic. This trail provides exercise and transportation for residents of Norfolk, as well as helps foster an appreciation for the environment and history of our city. This trail follows along the North Fork of the Elkhorn River before winding through historical Johnson Park and eventually tying into the recently completed Norfolk Avenue Bridge Trail. This project was made possible in large part to a grant the City received through the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.
Project Schedule:
- Design for the trail began in the summer of 2015
- A Request for Proposals Notice was sent in November 2017
- The bid tabulation was available in December 2017
- A contract was awarded to TR Harris Construction Inc. in January 2018
- Construction on the trail ended in September 2018
