Benjamin Avenue 1st to 13th Street Improvement Project
Project Overview:
The City of Norfolk has been working with design teams to create a plan to make much needed improvements to Benjamin Avenue from 13th Street to 1st Street. Benjamin Avenue is an urban arterial roadway that connects the City of Norfolk from east to west and provides access to many businesses. Over time, the pavement along this corridor has deteriorated and traffic studies have shown that this stretch of roadway has a high crash rate due to the lack of available turn lanes and the abundance of access points.
The City has been diligently working with the engineering firm, Schemmer and Associates, to create the re-construction plans along Benjamin Avenue. The plans include the widening of Benjamin Avenue to incorporate middle turn lanes, full removal and replacement of the concrete roadway, replacement of the box culvert deck, placing new sidewalk and trails, and landscaping along the corridor.
The City has contracted with BX Civil and Construction as the prime contractor on the project along with JEO to provide Construction Engineering Services on the project.
The project began on April 4, 2022 and is scheduled to be complete by November, 2023.
