In response to ongoing dry weather and heightened wildfire risk across Nebraska, Governor Jim Pillen has issued Executive Order No. 25-08, declaring a state of emergency and suspending burn permits statewide.
According to the executive order, a combination of moderate to extreme drought conditions and an extended period of dry weather have created a dangerous environment, significantly increasing the threat of wildfires. These conditions pose risks to public health, safety, and property.
Effective immediately, the order suspends the authority of local fire chiefs to waive open burning bans in any area of the state identified as being at high, very high, or extreme risk for rangeland fires. The suspension will remain in place through midnight on April 30, 2025.
The decision follows a review conducted by the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency, which confirmed the potential for drought-related emergencies statewide.
Residents are urged to stay informed, follow local fire safety guidelines, and report any signs of wildfire activity.
