Two citizens were honored last week by the Norfolk Fire Division for their lifesaving efforts. Cory Nelson and Cat Furst were honored for their heroic actions that took place on January 20, 2024.

After coming upon an unresponsive citizen in a parking lot, both Cory and Cat administered CPR until Norfolk Rescue arrived. Both are credited with saving the citizen’s life.

“This was a team effort and a true success story. Bystanders, 911 dispatchers, Norfolk Police, and Norfolk Fire personnel responded to this call and acted both swiftly and effectively,” said Fire Chief Tim Wragge. “One missing link from this crew could have changed everything, but it didn’t because this team knew what to do and came together. This day is special, this team is special, and we are grateful to be able to celebrate them all. I challenge others to act when called upon like Cory and Cat did. They made a difference and so can you,” Wragge added.

Norfolkans are encouraged to take CPR classes. Locally, classes are offered at Northeast Community College. Residents are also reminded to download the PulsePoint app, which notifies CPR-trained bystanders when a sudden cardiac arrest occurs on public property nearby so they can administer immediate CPR.
