Police Division

February 15th Press Release 2024

It has come to our attention that an individual claiming to be Officer Peter Jasper of Norfolk
Police called a local citizen trying to get banking information. We do not have an Officer Peter
Jasper.
During the call, the caller ID showed 402-644-8700 which is the police non-emergency
number. The suspect caller had some identifying information of the citizen and said they were
a victim of identity theft, and they were investigating. The suspect tried to get bank information
to verify a fraudulent transaction. The citizen became suspicious and asked to talk to the chief,
who the caller said was not available. When the victim asked for other officers by name, the
caller hung up.
In this case, the citizen handled the situation very well and was suspicious when asked to
release bank information.
As with all requests for money, bank information or donations, citizens should do their research
and only provide information to people you know. Unfortunately, we have seen an increase of
sophisticated fraudulent phone activity, even people portraying themselves as local law
enforcement.
If you are a victim of a scam, you can contact your local law enforcement, or the Nebraska
Attorney General's Consumer Affairs Response Team (CART). Complaints can be filed
at www.ProtectTheGoodLife.Nebraska.gov or by calling the Attorney General’s office at
(402) 471-2682 (toll-free: 800-727-6432).
