NEWS RELEASE
Another Law Enforcement Scam

March 1, 2024

It has come to our attention that two organizations called "U.S Deputy Sheriff’s Association”
and “National Police Association” are soliciting money for law enforcement in our area.
They are in the form of a mailing containing police information and asking for donations.
These organizations are not associated with Norfolk NE Police, or any other law enforcement
organization in the area that we are aware of.
The US Deputy Sheriff’s Association indicates they are out of Virginia. It is unknown how the
funds are used or who receives them. This is the same type of solicitation we reported in July
2023 from another organization called “Citizens Behind the Badge”. These two organizations
are based within minutes of each other in Virginia.
Research indicates that while the organizations may give a small amount to agencies, it is
unknown where most of the money goes, and it does not go to local law enforcement. Citizens
should always be aware and use caution with any solicitation. Norfolk PD does not solicit
funds by mail. As with all requests for money or donations, citizens should do their research
and only donate to organizations they are familiar with.
If you are a victim of a scam, you can contact your local law enforcement or the Nebraska
Attorney General's Consumer Affairs Response Team (CART). Complaints can be filed
at www.ProtectTheGoodLife.Nebraska.gov or by calling the Attorney General’s office at
(402) 471-2682 (toll-free: 800-727-6432).
