May 4th Press Release

On May 1, 2020 at 3:54 p.m., Norfolk Police were notified of an erratic driver. The reporting party said that an eastbound car on Hwy 275 had made a U-turn, started driving recklessly westbound, and almost went into the ditch. The vehicle then parked next to a business in the 500 block of East Omaha Avenue. When officers arrived they located the vehicle and had contact with the driver who was identified as Opal E. Lehmann, 36, of Norfolk. Lehmann was requested to perform field sobriety maneuvers. The results indicated impairment. She was then placed under arrest for driving under the influence of drugs. In a subsequent search of the vehicle, officers recovered a glass container that had a small amount of a white crystalline substance that tested positive for methamphetamine. A chemical test was requested from her but she refused. She was also charged with failure to submit to a chemical test and possession of a controlled substance. She was housed in the Norfolk City Jail and later transferred to the Madison County Jail.

On May 2, 2020 at about 12:25 a.m., Norfolk Police attempted to perform a traffic stop a car driven by Nathaniel M. Mahlin, 19, of Madison, as he had an active Madison County arrest warrant for first degree sexual assault. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle at 8th and Pasewalk. Mahlin refused to stop and accelerated quickly driving recklessly and at a high rate of speed through residential neighborhoods. The vehicle left the roadway at 12th St. and Nebraska Avenue and damaged some landscaping at a nearby house. It then aggressively backed up, narrowly missing a patrol car but then pulled to the side of the road as the car was disabled. Mahlin jumped from the car and ran from the officers. Officers pursued him on foot and located him hiding under a vehicle. He was taken into custody on the arrest warrant and also arrested for motor vehicle flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, and obstructing a peace officer. He was housed in the Norfolk City Jail and later transferred to the Madison County Jail
On May 2, 2020, at 7:46 p.m., Norfolk Police took a vehicle theft report in the 1500 block of Pasewalk Avenue. The victim reported that his truck was stolen around 7:30 p.m. As the officer was taking the report, another resident of the house received a phone call indicating that the truck was south bound on Highway 81. Platte County Deputies located the stolen truck in Columbus and took the driver into custody after a short foot pursuit. The suspect was identified as Dylan M. White, 19 years of age. White was being held in Platte County on local charges but will also be charged with the theft of the vehicle.

On May 3, 2020, at 1:21 p.m., Norfolk Police were called to a residence in the 900 block of S. 4th Street for a missing child. Officers searched the area, but could not find the child. During the investigation it was determined that the estranged mother of the child had taken the child from the property. The mother had not seen the child in several months and the father had legal custody. The mother was identified as Leticia K. Wiebelhaus, 34, homeless. She was contacted by phone but refused to return the child. Her cell phone was tracked to the West Point area. A Nebraska State Patrol Trooper located Wiebelhaus’s vehicle near Fremont and performed a traffic stop. The child was safely recovered and Wiebelhaus was arrested for a child custody violation. She was returned to Norfolk and housed in the Norfolk City Jail. She was later transferred to the Madison County Jail.
