Water/Sewer Division

Spring Sprinkler Memo

As the weather begins to warm up, the Norfolk Water Division would like to remind citizens of the City Code Section 26-4. Section 26-4 encourages citizens of an outdoor water schedule that is completely volunteer. Properties with street addresses ending in an even number (0, 2, 4, 6, and 8), are asked to voluntarily limit outdoor water usage to Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Properties with street addresses ending in an odd number (1, 3, 5, 7, and 9), are asked to voluntarily limit water usage to Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

This code is designed to make the water distribution system work more efficiently. Historically, Monday and Wednesday mornings, from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m., Norfolk has experienced the largest peak hours of water production. During these hours, we have seen peak usages of 12,639 gallons per minute or 18.2 million gallons per hour. The goal for this schedule is to reduce these high peak hours. Having citizens voluntarily schedule their outdoor water usage, we will lower these high peak hours and distribute the peak hours evenly over multiple days. This will reduce stress on the water system and maintain better system pressure. Better system pressure will increase sprinkler system efficiency.

We appreciate your cooperation with the City Code section 26-4. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Water Division at 402 844-2210.
