Improvements Coming to Parks and Recreation

On Monday, the Norfolk City Council gave approval to improve a pair of Parks and Recreation Division facilities, the Ta-Ha-Zouka softball complex spectator area which will be paved to accommodate ADA access and Veteran's Memorial baseball field which will be getting new infield AstroTurf.

As part of this project, Norfolk Public Schools is donating up to $100,000 to help fund the paving project and Northeast Community College is providing $100,000 towards the new turf.

“NPS is excited to partner with the City of Norfolk to improve the softball facilities at Ta-Ha-Zouka Park.  This summer's pavement project will address our immediate accessibility issues, while we anxiously await to hear from the Steering Committee regarding more comprehensive enhancements for the future,” said Dr. Jami Jo Thompson, Superintendent of Norfolk Public Schools.

“Northeast Community College is pleased to provide financial support for the needed upgrades to Veterans Memorial (Baseball) Field,” said Dr. Leah Barrett, college president. “This investment will allow our student-athletes the same opportunity to play on similar surfaces found at many facilities across the Midwest where they compete. From practices to game day, this improvement will positively impact the field for everyone who will use it for years to come.”

Northeast Community College’s softball program plays its home games at Ta-Ha-Zouka Park. Barrett said working in partnership with the City of Norfolk and Norfolk Public Schools on the upgrades demonstrates the true spirit of teamwork in making the improvements at both athletic complexes.

“Collaboration between the three entities to support both our athletic programs, our community and regional teams/clubs in softball and baseball is a win-win for all,” Barrett added.

“Their donations to the community is very much appreciated. Both contributions will help provide new opportunities for all and help us maintain the highest quality facilities in the state,” said Nate Powell, Parks and Recreation Director. “The ADA improvements should be completed by August, while the artificial turf should be completed by mid-December,” Powell added.

“These partnerships not only benefit and build pride within our youth sports programs, they make public facilities more accessible and user-friendly to all who care to use them.  We’re excited to make these much needed improvements together,” said Mayor Josh Moenning.
